시놉시스Synopsis
철호는 박봉에 시달리는 계리사 사무소 서기이다. 치매 증세를 보이며 “가자!”를 연발하는 노모, 만삭의 아내와 어린 딸, 양공주가 된 여동생 명숙과 퇴역군인 남동생 영호, 학업 대신 신문팔이에 나선 막내 민호 등 가족이 먹고 살기에도 빠듯한 월급에, 철호는 심한 치통을 앓으면서도 치과에 갈 엄두를 못 낸다. 실업자인 영호는 비관적인 현실을 타개하고자 은행을 털지만 실패하고 경찰에 붙잡힌다. 영호를 면회하고 집으로 돌아온 철호는 아내가 위독하다는 소식에 병원으로 가지만, 아내는 이미 숨을 거둔 뒤다. 거리를 방황하던 철호는 치과에 들러 이를 빼고, 발치의 고통에 휘청거리다 택시에 올라타 무기력하게 “가자”고 중얼거린다. 이범선의 동명 단편소설이 원작으로, 한국전쟁의 상흔과 전후의 궁핍한 사회상, 무기력과 좌절에 빠진 시대의 출구 없는 현실을 담아낸 한국 리얼리즘 영화의 대표적인 작품으로 꼽힌다.
Cheol-ho is a clerk at a CPA office, who lives with his mother, his pregnant wife, a younger sister, and a younger brother. His life is hard with his mother who became deranged during the war and always screams "Let's go!" His wife is pregnant but malnourished, his sister is a prostitute for foreigners and his younger brother is an unemployed veteran. However, it is difficult to take care of his family along with his salary. Even with a terrible toothache, going to the dentist isn't an option for him. One day, he receives a phone call from the police saying that his younger brother Yeong-ho was arrested for robbing a bank.
감독Director
1925년 황해도 사리원에서 태어난 유현목 감독은 동국대학교에서 최초의 대학 영화 동아리 ‘영화예술연구회’를 창립했으며, 1955년 <교차로>로 연출가로서 첫 발을 내딛었다. 어둡고 절망적인 사회현실을 사실적으로 묘사한 한국 영화사를 대표하는 수작 <오발탄>으로 주목받기 시작했다. 1976년부터 동국대학교 연극영화과 교수로 활동했으며 1990년 정년 퇴임했다. 1995년에는 <사람의 아들> 이후 15년간의 공백기를 보낸 뒤 70세의 나이로 영화 <말미잘>을 발표해 많은 영화인의 귀감이 되기도 했다. 수많은 수상경력을 가진 그의 대표작으로는 <김약국집 딸들>(1963),<순교자>(1965), <장마>(1979), <사람의 아들>(1980)등이 있다.
Born in 1925 in Sariwon, Hwanghae-do. Yu Hyun-mok founded the first college film club in Korea, 'The Motion Picture Arts Research Association,' at Dongguk University, and took his first step as a director in 1955 with The Crossroad. He began to draw attention as the masterpiece An Aimless Bullet, which represents the history of Korean cinema, a realistic depiction of the dark and hopeless social reality. He served as a professor of theater and film at Dongguk University since 1976 and retired in 1990. In 1995, after 15-year gap since The Son of a Man, he released the film Mom, The Star And The Sea Anemone at the age of 70, which served as a model for many filmmakers. His numerous award-winning works include Kim's Daughters (1963), The Martyrs (1965), Rainy Days (1979) and Son of a Man (1980).
