시놉시스Synopsis
호주에 사는 감독 트레버 그레이엄은 ‘후무스 중독자’로, 매주 집에서 의식을 치르듯 후무스를 만들곤 한다. 병아리콩을 으깨고, 레몬 주스와 소금, 마늘, 타이나, 그리고 쿠민 약간을 넣어 만드는 후무스. 2008년 중동에서는 ‘후무스 전쟁’이 발발했고, 이스라엘, 레바논 그리고 팔레스타인 간에는 열띤 논쟁이 벌어졌다. 어느 나라가 후무스의 원조인가를 논하는 이 ‘부엌 전쟁’은 아랍과 이스라엘 간의 분쟁 못지 않게 치열하다. 병사도, 총알도, 탱크도 없이 오로지 병아리콩과 후무스로 싸우는 이 전쟁에 호기심을 느낀 감독은 세 나라를 찾아가 후무스의 기원과 역사를 탐문하면서, 오랜 역사적 갈등과 대립에도 불구하고 실은 서로 닮은 문화를 새삼 돌아본다. ‘후무스 전쟁’에 대한 감독 개인의 감상을 결들인, 병아리콩으로 만든 가장 훌륭한 음식에 대한 유머러스한 오마주로, 2013년 베를린국제영화제에서 상영되었다.
Filmmaker Trevor Graham is an Australian ‘hummus tragic.’ Every week in his Bondi Beach home he obsessively observes the hummus making ritual–mashing chickpeas, lemon juice, garlic and tahina…with just a touch of cumin. But when the ‘Hummus War’ erupted in the Middle East in 2008, amongst the usual suspects, Israel, Lebanon and Palestine, Graham was intrigued and hungry for more. He discovers a war in the kitchen, just as ferocious as any Arab-Israeli conflict. But this war has no soldiers, bullets, rockets or tanks. Just – CHICK PEAS and HUMMUS! Who owns hummus, and who–Jew or Arab–has the most mouth-watering secret recipe? Are people who adore the same food, destined to share the same fate? Graham ponders a whacky proposition…could a regional love of hummus be the long yearned for solution to peace in the Middle East? Make Hummus Not War, is a humorous homage to the chickpea’s most distinguished dish with Graham’s personal story within the ‘hummus war.’

호주에서 30년간 활동해온 다큐멘터리 감독, 제작자, 작가. 그의 다큐멘터리들은 호주는 물론 세계 곳곳에서 상영 및 방영됐다. 1997년, 토레스 해협 머레이 섬에서 주거권을 지키기 위해 투쟁에 나선 에디 마보의 다큐멘터리 Mabo: Life of An Island Man을 쓰고 연출하여 호주영화연구소에서 주는 최우수 다큐멘터리상을 수상했다. 2010년 시드니기술대학에서 창조예술 박사학위를 받았다. 2002년과 2003년에 걸쳐 아넘랜드에 거주하면서 ABC TV 다큐멘터리 Lonely Boy Richard를 연출했고 작품은 2004년 AFI 최우수다큐멘터리 후보로 올랐다. 2012년 장편 다큐멘터리인 <후무스 이야기>를 연출하여 베를린영화제를 비롯 60곳이 넘는 수 많은 음식영화제와 음식축제에서 상영됐다. 2016년에는 <무슈 마요네즈>를 공동 제작, 연출하여 멜버른국제영화제에서 발표하기도 했다. 그는 현재 새로운 다큐멘터리 프로젝트 My Big Fat Italian Kitchen를 준비 중이다.
Trevor Graham has worked as a writer, producer, and director in the Australian film industry for over 30 years. His documentaries have been screened and broadcast nationally and around the world. In 1997 he directed Mabo: Life of an Island Man, a feature film about Indigenous land rights in Australia which won the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Documentary. In 2010 Graham was awarded a Doctorate in Creative Arts from the University of Technology, Sydney. Throughout 2002 and 2003 Graham lived for a year in Arnhem Land where he directed and filmed Lonely Boy Richard for ABC TV, was nominated for an AFI Award Best Documentary in 2004. Graham wrote & directed Make Hummus Not War in 2012 for the Melbourne International Film Festival’s Premiere Fund. It went on to screen at the Berlin Film Festival’s Culinary Cinema section and over 60 international film and food events. Monsieur Mayonnaise is Graham’s ninth film which has screened at the Melbourne International Film Festival. He is now working on his new documentary project My Big Fat Italian Kitchen.
