시놉시스Synopsis
멕시코 출신의 미혼모 후아나는 과일 노점을 그만 두고 좀더 안전하고 안정적인 일을 찾다가 일식 레스토랑의 주방 보조로 취직하게 된다. 레스토랑에서 스시 셰프들이 요리하는 모습을 보며 스시 셰프의 꿈을 키우는 후아나. 그러나 일본인도 남성도 아닌 후아나에게 인종과 성 차별의 벽은 높기만 하다. 하지만 온갖 악조건에도 불구하고 후아나는 꿈을 이루기 위한 노력을 멈추지 않는다. 스시 만드는 법을 어깨 너머로 배우고 손에 익을 때까지 연습을 게을리 하지 않던 중, 지역의 스시 챔피언 대회 소식을 접하게 되는데…
East•Side Sushi introduces us to Juana, a working-class Latina single mother who strives to become a sushi chef. Forced to give up her fruit-vending cart in order to find a more secure job, Juana lands a position as a kitchen assistant at a local Japanese restaurant. While working in the restaurant’s kitchen, Juana secretly observes the sushi chefs and teaches herself to make a multitude of sushi. Eventually she attempts to become a sushi chef, but is unable to because she is the "wrong" race and gender. Against all odds, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery, determined to not let anyone stop her from achieving her dream.

샌프란시스코주립대학교에서 영화를 전공한 후, 나이키, 야후 등의 상업광고 에디터로 활동했다. 이후 ILM, 티펫스튜디오 등에서 일하며 <스타워즈 에피소드 Ⅱ>, <캐리비언의 해적>, <아이언 맨>등의 블록버스터 영화에 참여했다. 코미디부터 신랄한 다큐멘터리 <angels wheelchairs> 같은 심각한 주제의 영화에 이르기까지 다양한 작품들을 쓰고 연출했다. 대표작으로 <san is…>(2011)와 샌프란시스코라티노영화제에서 최우수단편상을 받은 <I Need My Mocha>(2005)가 있으며 <아메리칸 초밥왕>은 그의 장편 데뷔작이다.
After receiving his B.A. in Film from San Francisco State University, Lucero worked as a commercial editor for several years with clients such as Nike and Yahoo. His move into the visual effects world for companies such as Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light and Magic and Tippett Studio has led him to work on such blockbusters as Star Wars - Episode II, Pirates of the Caribbean and Iron Man. He writes and directs films involving subjects ranging from comedic to deeply serious, such as the poignant 2007 documentary film Angels and Wheelchairs. Some of Lucero’s other award-winning projects include 2011’s San Francisco Is… and 2005’s I Need My Mocha, which captured Best Short Film at the San Francisco International Latino Film Festival. East•Side Sushi marks his feature film directorial debut.
