시놉시스Synopsis

<위대한 작은 농장>은 자연과 조화롭게 공존하는 삶을 찾아 나선 두 몽상가와 개의 긴 여정을 따라가는 영화다. 야생동물 프로그램을 찍어 온 존, 요리 블로거 겸 개인 요리사인 몰리 체스터는 사랑하는 반려견 토드가 자꾸 짖는다는 이유로 LA의 작은 아파트에서 퇴거 통지를 받는다. 도시를 벗어나기로 한 그들은 벤투라 카운티의 산자락에 있는 약 81만㎡의 땅에 다양성이 넘치면서 자연과 온전히 공존하는 농장을 만들 꿈에 부푼다. 그러나 그들이 고른 땅은 영양분이 고갈되다시피 한 데다 심각한 가뭄에 시달리고 있다. 영화는 1만 그루의 과수와 2백 가지의 작물을 심고, 암퇘지 엠마와 수탉 그리시를 포함한 다양한 동물들을 키우며 자신들의 유토피아를 만들고자 고군분투하는 부부의 8년 간의 지난한 노동과 드높은 이상에 대한 기록이다. 농장의 생태계가 되살아나고 희망이 자라는 순간 또다시 위기가 닥쳐오자, 그들은 자연과 공존하기 위해서는 자연의 지혜와 복잡함, 생명 그 자체에 대해 더 깊이 이해해야 한다는 것을 깨닫는다. 2018년 토론토국제영화제와 2019년 선댄스영화제, 베를린국제영화제의 음식 영화 부문에서 상영된 화제작. 

“The Biggest Little Farm” follows two dreamers and a dog on an odyssey to bring harmony to both their lives and the land. When the barking of their beloved dog Todd leads to an eviction notice from their tiny LA apartment, John and Molly Chester make a choice that takes them out of the city and onto 200 acres in the foothills of Ventura County, naively endeavoring to build one of the most diverse farms of its kind in complete coexistence with nature. The land they’ve chosen, however, is utterly depleted of nutrients and suffering from a brutal drought. The film chronicles eight years of daunting work and outsize idealism as they attempt to create the utopia they seek, planting 10,000 orchard trees and over 200 different crops, and bringing in animals of every kind - including an unforgettable pig Emma and Greasy the rooster. When the farm’s ecosystem finally begins to reawaken, so does the Chesters’ hope – but as their plan to create perfect harmony takes a series of wild turns, they realize that to survive they will have to reach a far greater understanding of the intricacies and wisdom of nature, and of life itself.
