시놉시스Synopsis

자아 정체성을 찾는다는 건 누구에게나 어렵지만, 12살 소년 에이브에게는 특히나 어려운 문제다. 에이브는 이스라엘인 엄마와 팔레스타인인 아빠 사이에서 태어났다. 엄마, 아빠는 에이브를 종교 없이 키웠지만, 할머니, 할아버지들은 에이브에게 유대교 또는 이슬람교 중 하나를 선택하라고 한다. 덕분에 에이브네 집은 조용할 날이 없다. 에이브라함, 아브라함, 이브라힘 등 이름을 부르는 방법도 모두 다르지만, 에이브는 그냥 ‘에이브’로 불리길 원한다. 그러던 중 에이브는 브라질 셰프 치코를 만나게 된다. 퓨전 요리가 특기인 치코는 맛을 잘 섞으면 그 음식을 먹는 사람들도 식탁 앞에서 친해질 수 있다고 믿는다. 에이브는 치코에게 어떻게 음식을 조화롭고 맛있게 섞어 만들 수 있는지를 배운다. 추수감사절 저녁 식탁에 자신의 다양한 뿌리를 모두 반영한 여러 가지 요리를 준비하는 에이브. 가족들은 에이브의 요리를 통해 기나긴 싸움을 끝내고 화목한 가족으로 거듭날 수 있을까? 오랜 세월 지속된 민족 갈등을 한 가족 안에서 다루면서 함께 나누어 먹는 음식과 사랑의 힘을 보여주는 따뜻한 영화로, 2019년 선댄스영화제 상영작.

Finding one’s identity is a challenge everyone faces, but few have the pressure that 12-year-old Abe feels as the son of an Israeli mother and Palestinian father. Though his parents have raised him in a secular household, both sets of grandparents insist he chooses between being Jewish or Muslim. Thankfully, Abe has a passion for food that allows him some escape from the escalating family tensions that are a reflection of the generations-old conflict between Israel and Palestine. While exploring Brooklyn to discover new foods, he meets Chico, a Brazilian chef who believes “mixing flavors can bring people together.” Chico teaches Abe not only the inner workings of a professional kitchen but how to blend flavors with delicious results. Abe uses his newfound cooking skills to plan a Thanksgiving feast that celebrates his diverse heritage, with the hope of unifying his family. This coming-of-age tale demonstrates the power of food and love to overcome prejudices, while illuminating the challenges surrounding one of the longest-running conflicts on our planet.
